Jessye Norman to be honored by NAACP

Augusta native and renowned opera singer Jessye Norman will be honored Wednesday during the NAACP national convention.

Norman, a Grammy-award winning opera and jazz artist, will receive the Spingarn Medal at the organization’s 104th national convention in Orlando, Fla., according to a news release.

The medal, considered the NAACP’s highest honor, is awarded for outstanding and noble achievement by an American citizen of African descent, according to the release.

Civil rights activist John Lewis will present the award to Norman, who is the 98th recipient of the Spingarn Medal.
