Golden Harvest Food Bank is harnessing the power of social media to help feed hungry schoolchildren.
In a contest sponsored by Wal-Mart’s Fighting Hunger Together Campaign, Golden Harvest was selected to compete against 301 other food banks and partner agencies for a grant to help feed the hungry.
The 40 organizations tallying the most votes through a Facebook application will each win $45,000.
Carolann Utley, a spokeswoman for Golden Harvest, said the money will help send food home with schoolchildren on weekends.
“The $45,000 will go towards our backpack program, which will provide over 9,000 backpacks next year,” she said. “So when they come back to school on Monday they are not hungry.”
Individuals can participate by visiting Golden Harvest’s Facebook page and casting a vote once a day, every day until the contest ends April 30.
Last year, Golden Harvest received 3,600 votes – about 2,000 votes shy of winning $20,000.
“It’s basically a popularity contest to get as many votes as possible,” Utley said.
The contest is part of Wal-Mart’s initiative to donate more than $3 million to Feeding America network food banks and partner agencies in 2013.
