Porter Fleming Foundation awards seven grants to history and art projects

The estate of Augusta author and artist Berry Fleming keeps on giving with this year’s award of Porter Fleming Foundation grants.

Seven projects advancing history and art in the Augusta area received grants administered by the Trustees of the Academy of Richmond County. The 2013 recipients include the Augusta Photo Festival; Westobou Festival; a series of musical performances at Union Baptist Church; an electronic book on the history of Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art; and others.

“We look for organizations that are going to preserve history, stimulate reading and encourage participation in the arts,” said Cobbs Nixon, chairman of the foundation founded in 1963 by Barry Fleming in honor of his father.

The foundation does not release the specific amount of the grants that were announced at a reception Thursday afternoon at the Old Medical College of Georgia. Nixon said millions of dollars have been given away to enrich lives of Augusta citizens.

Gertrude Herbert’s electronic book tells the story of the art institute since 1937, when the historic Ware’s Folly house was purchased by Olivia Herbert and saved from demolition, said education director Dorothy Eckmann. Georgia Regents University art history professor Karen Klacsmann conducted the research.

“That document was pulled together in an exhibit in our main gallery when we had our 75th anniversary celebration in January,” Eckmann said.

Also funded was a new Civil War exhibit highlighting area events in 1864 at the Augusta Museum of History; a tour of colonial Augusta sites at the annual meeting of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia; and research by local historian Russell K. Brown on four Civil War cannons preserved at Georgia Regents University and Fort Gordon.

The Augusta Photo Festival will use its grant for a workshop series and exhibition focused on photography in the historic Laney-Walker and Bethlehem neighborhoods.

Three music events at Union Baptist Church will raise funds for the continued restoration of the historic church.
