Regional Spelling Bee set for Saturday

After he won the Richmond County Spelling Bee on Feb. 1, fifth-grader Jacob Martin said he had one goal – to get to the national spelling bee.

Today, he has his chance.

Jacob will face five-time Columbia County champion Rachael Cundey and 13 other county winners at the Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held at The Augusta Chronicle News Building.

The winner will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be held in Washington, D.C., from May 26 to June 1.

Today’s bee starts at 10 a.m.

The doors will be closed at that time and no one will be allowed in or out to minimize distractions for the spellers, said El Whittle, the Newspapers in Education manager for The Chronicle and the bee organizer.

Cameras and video recorders are not permitted.

Judges will be Dr. Paulette Harris, from Georgia Regents University; Dr. Audie Holmes, from Paine College; and Cindy Gelinas, from the University of South Carolina Aiken.

The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the national spelling bee by The Chronicle, the events’ sponsor.
