Grovetown granddad wins $400,500 in lottery

Carl Newman, of Grovetown, and his wife, Diane, hold a symbolic check from Carl's winnings in a Georgia Lottery scratch-off game.

A Grovetown grandfather is $400,500 richer after winning two Georgia Lottery prizes.

Carl Newman, 60, won $500 on the scratch-off game Bonanza, and then won $400,000 on another ticket, according to a release from the Georgia Lottery.

“I scratched it in the store,” he is quoted as saying in the release. “I called my wife, and said, ‘You’re not going to believe this!’ ”

Newman purchased the tickets at the Circle K at 5101 Wrightsboro Road in Grovetown.

Married 41 years, Newman and his wife, Dianne, have four adult children and 14 grandchildren. The Newmans claimed the prize Monday at Georgia Lottery headquarters in Atlanta.

“We’ll put some toward retirement, buy a new truck and pay off our car note,” Newman said.
