Evans school, neighborhood without water from line break

A major water main break has left a Columbia County school and nearby neighborhood dry for the afternoon, but officials hope to have the problem fixed before storms get the workers wet.

The main water line on Evans-to-Locks Road ruptured this morning, said Columbia County Water Utility Operations Manager Mark Inglett.

To repair the line, crews have had to shut off water to Stevens Creek Elementary and to The Abbeys, Inglett said.

“We had to isolate a larger area in order to focus on the feed line going into The Abbeys,” he said.

Stevens Creek Elementary remains open, with school system maintenance crews trucking in water to allow toilets to flush and the lunchroom making changes to allow meal service to continue, a spokesperson said.

The repair work is expected to take several hours, Inglett said, and the crews hope to be finished before a large storm system moves into the area later this afternoon.
