Ga. county's '1st baby' born in Walmart restroom

A Georgia county’s “first baby” of 2013 was born in a Walmart restroom, officials acknowledge.

The baby, a boy, was born Wednesday in the store outside Commerce, near Athens, when his 37-year-old mother unexpectedly went into labor about a month early.

Medics from Banks County responded to the store and found the baby and mother in the restroom.

“All we had do to was cut the umbilical cord,” EMT Scotty Mathis told a reporter for Fox 5 TV in Atlanta.

“We’re glad that the mom and baby seem to be doing well,” Walmart spokeswoman Ashley Hardie told The Athens Banner-Herald newspaper on Thursday. “We’ve been in contact with them and I know the store is sending flowers to congratulate both of them.”

Although the TV report made reference to the baby being the first born this year in Banks County, others point out the county does not have a hospital and most births take place in facilities elsewhere. Last year, the country recorded no births, officials said.

The baby and mother were transported to Athens Regional Medical Center.
