Christmas parade will close downtown Augusta streets

A day of continuous events to jumpstart the Christmas holidays Saturday will begin with several hours of traffic changes downtown and end with the mayor “throwing the lights.”

Broad Street’s westbound lanes from 13th to 15th streets will be closed starting at 9 a.m. while crews prepare for the 2 p.m. parade, according to Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Raul Fernandez. Sixth to 12th streets will be partially closed during that time.

Starting at 1 p.m., westbound lanes from Sixth to 15th streets will be closed.

Eastbound lanes and side streets will be open to traffic.

The parade, which will begin at 2 p.m., will start at 13th Street and travel east to Sixth Street, where it will turn south toward the municipal building.

“As soon as the parade starts moving and clears the intersections, (the lanes) will be wide open,” Fernandez said.

After the parade, the celebration will continue at Augusta Common with performances throughout the afternoon.

At 6:15 p.m., Mayor Deke Copenhaver will turn on the downtown holiday lights, and a fireworks display will follow.
