Action Ministries Augusta launches annual Christmas giveaway

As November approaches, the Rev. Gregory DeLoach is focusing on the season and spirit of giving.

On Tuesday, he spoke to a gathering of about 25 people at Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church for the annual White Christmas kickoff event of Action Ministries Augusta. This year, about 500 families with 1,800 children will receive gifts donated by area churches, businesses and individuals.

DeLoach, the senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Augusta, encouraged the crowd to continue giving even after leaving the event. Proceeds from the luncheon help purchase whole chickens that are included in 250 food baskets distributed to mostly elderly adults and some who are disabled and homebound.

“In Augusta, Georgia and the CSRA, as great as these figures are reaching 500 families, 1,800 children and 250 adults, as great as that accomplishment is ministering to that many families, there are so many more that get marginalized and left out,” he said.

Action Ministries has finished accepting applications from those seeking assistance at Christmas. The organization needs sponsors to fulfill wish lists of the children and shop for the gifts throughout November.

Gifts for each child total about $70 including toys, bicycles, clothing, jackets and pajamas.

“There are a lot of people who are deciding how am I going to pay the light bill if my child wants something,” DeLoach said. “What parent wants to disappoint their children?”
