Salvation Army of Augusta to auction 50 vehicles

A white Ford F-150 pickup caught the eye of Sylvia Lamb. Her father’s truck is failing, and he needs another one fast.

Lamb cranked the truck’s engine Friday while contemplating placing a bid at the Salvation Army of Augusta’s Auto Auction. She plans to start bidding at $500.

“If they beat me out of $500, no more than $600,” she said. “That’s the limit.”

Lamb and others browsed more than 50 cars, trucks, boats, scooters and a Jet Ski that are on the auction block today. Proceeds from the sale benefit social services in the Augusta area, including alcohol and drug rehabilitation, an emergency shelter, a soup kitchen and job skills training.

“This is one of our largest fundraisers,” said Capt. Tony Perez, the administrator of the Salvation Army of Augusta. “The community has donated cars, and we auction them off to help serve in our community.”

The previous auction raised $72,000, and today’s goal is about $45,000, Perez said.

The auction, held four times a year, features plenty of vehicles – some of which need work to get back on the road.

“The buyer can possibly find a decent, used vehicle at a low cost,” Perez said. “If there are minor dents, they can put a little money into it and have a really good car.”

Rufus O’Bryant, of Augusta, said he could use his skills as a former Army mechanic to get a truck into working order. His heart was set on a 1990 Chevrolet Cheyenne, but it sank when he went to inspect the engine and found there wasn’t one.

O’Bryant might bid, but lower. There’s also a newer white Ford.

He has donated three cars to the auction in the past and hopes to get one in return.

“I think I’ll be helping out the programs they have here and also help myself out,” he said. “Getting a good value on a good vehicle.”
