Traffic is backed up for miles along Interstate 20 between Grovetown and Appling because of a series of morning crashes.
Authorities currently are investigating four crashes in the eastbound lanes, which temporarily were closed, said Columbia County Sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.
Most of the crashes are rear-enders resulting from rubberneckers driving through the area, and personnel from Martinez-Columbia Fire Rescue and Gold Cross EMS also are working along the stretch. Information on injuries isn’t yet available, Morris said.
Westbound lanes remain open but traffic is slowed by emergency vehicles and motorists viewing the crashes.
