Thurmond Lake Day of Service set for Sept. 29

Park rangers at Thurmond Lake are recruiting volunteers for a Sept. 29 Day of Service targeting Petersburg Campground in Columbia County.

“The idea is to let people come out and enjoy being in the woods and experiencing the outdoors, while also giving something back and having fun,” said Army Corps of Engineers ranger David Quebedeaux.

Cleanup and maintenance activities will be held from 8 a.m. to noon at the 93-campsite facility on Petersburg Road, which has been honored with a listing among America’s top 25 family campgrounds. The event is held in conjunction with National Public Lands Day.

“We do one of these at least every year, and in the past, we’ve had about 75 people show up,” Quebedeaux said. Volunteers already participating include members of the Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, CSRA Equestrians and local Boy Scouts.

Work projects includes pressure-washing the gatehouse complex, clearing brush near campsites and getting campsites ready for another year of service. Participants should bring shovels, rakes, lopping shears, gloves and drinking water

Previous events included a 2011 work day at Clarks Hill Park and at Below Dam, S.C. Park in 2010.

Volunteers will meet at Petersburg’s group shelter.
