Early-morning crash kills man during heavy storm
A 34-year-old Augusta man died early Monday after losing control of a car in heavy rain.
Curtis Junior Ware, of Sycamore Drive, wrecked on Walton Way near Langford Middle School and was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:25 a.m.
Richmond County sheriff’s Capt. Scott Gay said the car spun across the road, hit the curb, became airborne, smashed into a brick wall and landed atop Ware, who had been ejected.
“It was raining really hard at the time of the accident,” Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald said.
Gay said deputies detected an alcohol odor from Ware when they arrived. Toxicology results are pending.
