Grovetown man killed by tree limb

A Grovetown man was killed Monday when a tree limb fell and hit him on the head in his backyard.

Steven Cotton, 42, of the 100 block of Lottie Lane, was unlocking a shed when the dead limb broke off and fell about 80 feet, said Columbia County Coroner Vernon Collins.

Part of the limb fell onto the shed and broke, Collins said.

“The rest of it hit him in the top of the head, killing him instantly,” he said.

Collins said he pronounced Cotton dead about 5:15 p.m.

“He probably just heard a sound and that was it,” Collins said.

As a precaution, Cotton’s body was taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Augusta for an autopsy, Collins said.
