Man found in Augusta Canal drowned

An autopsy has determined a 52-year-old homeless man found floating in the Augusta Canal on Wednesday drowned, but police still don’t know how he ended up in the shallow water.

A passersby called police after seeing the body – later identified as Elliott Bernard Anthony – about 10:30 a.m. in the canal at 13th Street and Walton Way.

Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Blaise Dresser said Anthony had been released the previous day from nearby University Hospital, where he was having his arm recasted after an injury.

Hospital officials told officers Anthony later returned to the hospital and appeared to be intoxicated.

It is unclear how Anthony drowned in the shallow water where he was found, authorities said. There is no evidence to suggest he hit his head or suffered any other injuries before the drowning, however, toxicology tests are pending, they said.
