Golden Harvest, post office collect 122,000 pounds of food

The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive held Saturday exceeded last year’s donation total by more than 5,000 pounds.

More than 122,000 pounds were collected by letter carriers from bags of food placed at mailboxes, said Golden Harvest Food Bank event coordinator Carrie Jones. Last year, 117,000 pounds of food were donated.

The number reported Monday — 122,102 pounds — was from a preliminary weigh-in that will likely grow higher after late contributions are collected Tuesday morning, Jones said. After Golden Harvest sorts the donations at its Augusta and Aiken warehouses, the food will be distributed to its partner agencies.

“It was a wonderful day and we are grateful for the post office helping us with this drive,” Jones said.
