Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 158 raised and spent about $10,000 to repair and protect the Confederate Soldiers Memorial in downtown Augusta, according to Camp Commander Ron Udell.
The improvements include a chain guard installed around the monument this week in an effort to keep skateboarders out, Udell said.
"They've got no respect," he said. "We're just trying to do something to keep them off of it."
The monument, a 47-foot obelisk of Italian marble atop a 25-foot Georgia granite base, was dedicated in 1878.
