Morning wreck spills 6,000 gallons of fertilizer on U.S. 1

An 18-wheeler flipped on U.S. Highway 1 around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, spilling 6,000 gallons of liquid nitrogen fertilizer.

The Augusta Fire Department, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and a hazardous materials crew responded to the scene about five miles north of the Blythe and the Richmond County line, according to dispatch supervisor Robert McLerren.

One of two southbound lanes was blocked into the afternoon as the hazardous materials crews cleaned up the scene, McLerren said.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is investigating what caused the truck to flip over.

The truck driver was taken to a local hospital, but McLerren could not comment on his condition.
