Man injured in moped crash on Deans Bridge Road

A man driving a moped received massive head injuries after a pickup and the moped collided about 6:15 p.m. Saturday on Deans Bridge Road about a quarter-mile from Fort Gordon’s Gate 5. Phillip Tweety was transported to Medical College of Georgia Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Two mopeds driven by Tweety and his wife, Janie Tweety, were traveling side-by-side in the right southbound lane of Deans Bridge Road when officers think the truck swerved from the left lane and hit the moped from behind, said Lt. Randal Prickett, of the Richmond County Special Operations Division. The wife’s moped, which was closet to the lane shoulder, was not hit by the truck. She was taken to the hospital by car for minor scratches she got while laying down her moped on the roadside, Prickett said.

The driver of the truck, James Adams, was not injured. The accident is still under investigation and charges are pending against the truck driver and moped drivers, who are believed to be an elderly couple, Prickett said. The couple were wearing helmets.

Deans Bridge Road southbound was closed for about two hours while traffic was diverted to Old Highway 1.
