Flood watch in effect for Augusta-area counties

A resident of Windmill Plantation measure more than 6 inches of rain after a thunderstorm late Sunday.

More rain could cause more flooding in an already soggy Columbia County.

A flood watch is in effect until 8 p.m. today for Columbia, Richmond, Burke, McDuffie and Lincoln counties, according to Columbia County Emergency and Operations Division Director Pam Tucker. Showers and thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rains are possible through the evening.

Sunday’s rains produced 1.5 to 4 inches of rain in most areas of the Columbia County. Residents of Windmill Plantation on Washington Road at William Few Parkway in Evans reported 6.4 inches of rain Sunday evening, Tucker said.

The flooding produced by the heavy rains didn’t damage homes or close roads. Tucker said low-lying areas, including ditches, flooded because storm drains couldn’t handle the drainage quickly enough. Areas receiving torrential downpours today also could see water back up as it flows toward storm drains, Tucker said.
