Thursday's welcome rain deluges some areas but skips others

Pea-sized hail fell Thursday in parts of Columbia County, including in the Crawford Creek subdivision.

Pre-dawn showers that meandered through much of Georgia on Thursday dumped as much as three inches of much-needed rain in portions of Columbia County, while sparing areas to the west and south, including much of Augusta.

Pea-sized hail also fell across parts of Columbia County, according to Pam Tucker, the county’s emergency services director.

Columbia County’s Crawford Creek Wastewater Plant off Columbia Road had the most rainfall in the county with 3.3 inches, Tucker said.

The Columbia County Government Center in Evans was next with 3.23 inches.

Other Columbia County totals included 2.97 inches at Petersburg Station, 2 inches at the county’s Little River Water Treatment Plant off Hardy-McManus Road and 1.8 inches at the Reed Creek Wastewater Plant off Stevens Creek Road.

Farther west, areas along Thurmond Lake received much less rain, with 0.75 inch recorded at the Clarks Hill drinking water plant near Pollard’s Corner.

The National Weather Service gauge at Augusta Regional Airport recorded just 0.09 inch, with 0.62 inch falling at Daniel Field Airport at Wrightsboro Road and Highland Avenue.
