ATLANTA — The House voted Thursday to hang a portrait of the late Jack Connell in the Capitol.
After 26 years, Connell was the longest-serving speaker pro tempore of the House of Representatives, the No 2 post in the 180-member legislative body. He was also an Augusta Democrat who served 34 years in the General Assembly. He died last year at age 93.
Rep. Barbara Sims, R-Augusta, sponsored House Resolution 870 to petition the Capitol Arts Standards Commission to find a suitable place for the painting. The commission regulates the placement of monuments, paintings and statues in the Capitol.
