Second Augusta Commission District 2 candidate announces run

Augusta pastor and businessman Cleveland “Cleve” Garrison announced Thursday he’s seeking the District 2 Commission post.

Garrison, who joins retired Veterans Administration employee Dennis Williams in running for the seat currently held by Mayor Pro Tem Corey Johnson, said he’ll work to reduce blight and help the elderly in District 2.

“There are so many elderly that we overlook,” said Garrison, who owns an iron works business.

Garrison added that utilizing local contractors on city contracts was a priority, to “leave some of the revenue here” as was increasing unity on the sometimes-fractured 10-member commission.

“The main thing is to bring unity to the commission and make Augusta a better place,” he said.

The election of Augusta’s next mayor and five commissioners is scheduled for May 20, with qualifying for the posts to start March 3.
