Walton Communities selected for Cherry Tree site

The Marietta, Ga.-based developer that created Walton Oaks and the Legacy at Walton Oaks at the site of a former housing project has been tapped to build more apartments for Augusta Housing Authority.

The housing authority voted Thursday to enter into an agreement with developer Walton Communities to build a housing complex at the site of Cherry Tree Crossing, an aging housing project on 15th Street the authority is tearing down. After a bidding process that began about 30 days ago, a review committee awarded Walton Communities the most points, 376, over The Woda Group, Miller Valentine and H.J. Russell and Co., authority Executive Director Jacob Oglesby said.

The Woda Group, of Savannah, was runner-up with 290 points, according to a bid tabulation sheet.

Though a developer has been selected, most Cherry Tree residents still remain in their homes.

Buddy Oldfield, the authority director of resident services, said that of 355 families that lived at Cherry Tree, 311 remained Thursday. That could change rapidly as the authority distributes 153 more vouchers by today.

Of the families that have moved, 23 used vouchers and 14 “moved on their own” – including some court-ordered evictions, Oldfield said.

Asked about resident complaints by authority member David Steele, Oldfield said he had heard only one, from a woman who disliked the counselor assigned to help her family relocate.
