City begins removing 'unhealthy' Highland Avenue oaks

Nine large 80-year-old oaks are being removed from the Highland Avenue right-of-way between Walton Way and Central Avenue because they’re a hazard, city officials said Monday.

“They’re big, old trees,” city traffic engineer Steve Cassell said. “We found nine that just had to come down. They’re just too unhealthy.”

Dan Bauer of Arbor Equity said the city hired his company to remove the trees. Most are 60 feet tall, with canopies from 60 to 80 feet wide, he said.

Most residents became aware of the work when engineers tagged the trees last week or when city officials announced the road closure.

Highland homeowner Roggie Wilkes said she learned about trees being cut after the decision had been made.

“If I had had any problems with it, it was too late,” she said.

The work should be completed Tuesday.
