Gun control opponents to rally Saturday at Augusta Common

Opponents of President Obama’s effort to impose restrictions on certain types of military-style weapons will rally to voice their concerns Saturday at Augusta Common.

The Second Amendment Rally is sponsored by the Libertarian Party of the CSRA and other unaffiliated libertarians, according to event organizer Evan Scureman.

“The purpose basically is to show our support for the Second Amendment,” Scureman said. “We also want to show our Georgia legislators that we do not support federal legislations restricting our rights to bear arms.”

Scureman said Obama’s proposal to outlaw semi-automatic assault weapons and impose limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines would have little effect but restrict the rights of those who wish to defend themselves with firearms.

“The magazine ban, for example, that is going to be completely ineffective in stopping the mass shootings that it is supposed to prevent,” he said. “But for self-defense, a magazine ban can certainly be a liability.”

Among the speakers for the event will be Rocky Eades with the Libertarian Party and Don Edwards with, an organization that advocates for the rights of citizens to carry firearms. It has successfully fought restrictions that barred firearms from some public places such as restaurants and bars and is backing a bill in the Legislature that would remove restrictions against carrying firearms in public parks.

The rally’s Facebook page says those who attend Saturday can “carry whatever they are legally able to – or not.”

Richmond County sheriff’s Lt. Calvin Chew said special-duty deputies will be at the event to provide security.

Scureman said organizers are not advocating that everyone bring a gun to Augusta Common.

“They are welcome to, but we don’t encourage it any way or the other,” he said.
