The Columbia County Community and Emergency Services Committee dealt with biking, fishing and boat racing Tuesday morning.
Among the items agreed on were a proposal to rent storage space beneath the restrooms at Savannah Rapids Park to the Bicycle Peddler, the business running bicycle rentals at the park. Gene Whitaker, the business owner, would pay the county $300 a month and provide his own insurance.
The committee also agreed to a large bass fishing tournament and power boat races next year.
The American Bass Anglers American Fishing Tour National Championship will issue invitations to 500 anglers, and the county’s fee will be on a sliding scale of $6,000 to $20,000.
Community and Leisure Services Director Barry Smith said he instituted the sliding scale to ensure hotel tax revenue would cover the fee. He said he expects the fee to be about $10,000.
The committee agreed to pay a $1,000 fee to bring the Carolina Virginia Racing Association power boat races back to Columbia County.
“This was a very popular event last year and very well-attended,” Smith said.
Smith asked for an amended contract with Toole Engineering for the design of the first phase of the Euchee Creek Greenway. Smith said construction of a bridge outside Grovetown on Wrightsboro Road presented an opportunity to build a trailhead and a 20-space parking lot.
The committee approved an additional $5,000 fee for preliminary plans and final construction documents.
“This will keep Grovetown from dealing with people parking in the city,” Smith said. “People need a place to unload those bikes.”
