Columbia County puts college name issue on Aug. 21 agenda

Meanwhile, Augusta commission remains silent on issue

The Columbia County Commission doesn’t like the Georgia Regents University name, either.

Commissioner Charles Allen proposed at Tuesday’s Management and Financial Services meeting that an item be added to the agenda for the county’s Aug. 21 commission meeting.

He said he would like to have a resolution prepared asking the University System of Georgia Board of Regents to reconsider the name they chose for the merged Georgia Health Sciences and Augusta State universities. The proposal passed unanimously.

“I think it’s important they understand where we are at on this,” Allen said.

The resolution will go before the full
commission next week.

Augusta Commissioner Jerry Brigham, who tried to get his city’s commission to approve a resolution in support of keeping “Augusta” in the new name, said Tuesday that there had been no commission discussion about weighing in on the matter since the announcement.

Brigham’s resolution, which needed six votes to pass, received only five supporting votes June 5. Commissioners Bill Lockett and Matt Aitken opposed it, and three other commissioners were absent when the vote was taken.
