Fort Hood soldier with Augusta ties found dead

Staff Sgt. Donald Perry Sumner Jr., an Augustan serving at Fort Hood in Texas, was pronounced dead Saturday after being found unresponsive at his home earlier that day.

Sumner was found in his off-post residence in Harker Heights, Texas, and events surrounding his death are currently under investigation.

He had been at Fort Hood since August 2010 and entered the military in 1988. He was deployed four times in Operation Iraqi Freedom, with his most recent stint from November 2008 to October 2009. His awards and decorations include four Army commendation medals and seven Army good conduct medals.
