Augusta officials investigate allegations of time fraud in recreation department

Augusta officials are looking into allegations of time fraud at the Recreation, Parks and Facilities Department.

Deputy City Administrator Bill Shanahan confirmed Monday that he was “doing an investigation” into some sort of time fraud at the department but declined to comment further. “I don’t want to interfere with the investigation,” he said.

City Administrator Fred Russell said the investigation may involve a salaried employee, but declined to comment further.

Recreation, Parks and Facilities Director Tom Beck said he had no comment about the investigation. “Obviously, this has come from a disgruntled employee,” Beck said.

Several employees were let go or reassigned to different jobs during the department’s merger last year with public services, a department that was eliminated . Some employees lost recreation department jobs when management of the city-owned golf course was outsourced.
