Forum for Augusta Commission District 1 candidates planned

A downtown business group and a black fraternity are sponsoring a forum Wednesday for candidates seeking the District 1 Augusta commission seat.

The Downtown Augusta Alliance and the Alpha Chi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., are holding a “debate forum” for the four candidates at 7 p.m. at the Augusta-Richmond County main library, 823 Telfair St., with a meet-and-greet at 6 p.m.

Augusta has four candidates seeking the nonpartisan District 1 commission post: incumbent Matt Aitken, a supervisor at Olin Corp.; Bill Fennoy, a retired health educator who ran unsuccessfully against Aitken three years ago; Denice Traina, a Harrisburg activist and former co-chairwoman of the Georgia Green Party; and Stanley Hawes, a retired Laney-Walker Neighborhood Association president.

Ben Casella, the president of the Downtown Augusta Alliance, said the forum is open to all residents regardless of address.

District 1 includes the city’s Harrisburg, Laney-Walker, Bethlehem and east Augusta communities as well as the downtown business district.

“Your business is downtown, no matter where you live, so please come and hear what all four candidates have to say,” Casella said in a news release.
