Weather prompts closings by area schools

Richmond County schools will be closed for students and staffers today and Wednesday because of the winter storm forecast for the area.

District administrators will determine by noon Wednesday whether schools will also be closed Thursday, according to Superintendent Frank Roberson.

Columbia County schools opened at normal times today, but officials have announced classes will be let out two hours early. Middle and high schools will let out at 1 p.m., and elementary schools at 2 p.m. Classes have been canceled for Wednesday.

The elementary half day classes in Aiken County, such as 4K, preschool special eduction and child development were canceled for Tuesday. A two-hour early release schedule was announced at 9 a.m. today, and classes and extra-curricular activities have been canceled for Wednesday.

Georgia Regents University also called off classes today at both its campuses. Georgia Regents Medical Center will remain open. Tuesday’s State of the University and Health System address by GRU President Ricardo Azziz has been cancelled.

Burke County schools will release early at 1 p.m. Tuesday and be closed Wednesday.

Edgefield County schools will be dismissed two hours early Tuesday, closed Wednesday and will operate on a two-hour delay Thursday, according to administrative assistant Stephanie Williams.

McDuffie County schools will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, with a decision yet to be made about Thursday.

Episcopal Day School will be closed Tuesday with a decision about Wednesday’s schedule to be forthcoming.


Augusta Preparatory day school will close both today and Wednesday. Westminster Schools of Augusta will be closed today and will make a decision about Wednesday later.

The area will be under a winter storm watch from 11 a.m. today until 9 a.m. Wednesday as temperatures dip into the mid-20s.

The National Weather Service predicts a mixture of rain and sleet beginning this afternoon, which could turn into snow overnight.
