Emergency calls from the University of South Carolina Aiken campus can now be pinpointed to an exact location to make response faster and more accurate.
“It is crucial for emergency responders to be equipped with specific locations in case of any emergency situation on campus,” Chancellor Sandra Jones said in a news release. “We want to have a safe and secure environment for our students as well as for our faculty and staff.”
Before Pinpoint 911 was installed, all 911 calls made from campus showed only the main street address, 471 University Parkway, to the operator. Any further details about location had to come from the caller.
According to a news release, the issue had caused problems for emergency responders.
All streets on campus have been named. Students and visitors to campus will now see street signs displaying some of the new names, including Scholar Loop, Leadership Way and Proud Pacer Drive.
Along with the new names, the more than 900 phone extensions on campus now have location identifiers that will alert 911 dispatchers to the exact location of the call, down to the building and room number.
