Augusta back-to-school giveaway set for Saturday

More than 10,000 school supply items will be given out Saturday during the Communitywide PTA and Back to School Kickoff.

The giveaway will be be from 9 a.m. to noon in the Big Lots parking lot on Peach Orchard Road.

Now in its fifth year, the back-to-school event will feature free health screenings, inflatables, food and face painting.

“It’s just a fun day for the kids,” said Monique Braswell, the president of the Richmond County Council of PTAs. “It’s a fun family day.”

She said more than 100 cases of notebook paper, one-subject notebooks and composition books will be distributed to anyone who needs them.

Supplies will be sorted onto tables geared toward elementary, middle and high school students. Those who need supplies are welcome to pick up what they need, she said.

Braswell said the giveaway was started to encourage parent participation. In previous years, it has been held at Georgia Regents University’s Christenberry Fieldhouse, Glenn Hills Middle School and James Brown Arena.

This year, it is in the Big Lots parking lot to cut down on expenses.

“I felt like I could get more supplies if I took it back to the streets,” Braswell said. “The James Brown Arena was very gracious with us. I just needed to be able to give people more.”
