Aiken Tech president honored for nuclear workforce development

Aiken Technical College President Susan Winsor was honored recently with a 2013 Energy Leadership Award from the Charlotte Business Journal for her contributions to training the region’s nuclear workforce.

Winsor and nine other community and industry leaders were honored last week at the Journal’s third annual Energy Leadership Awards luncheon in Charlotte, N.C.. The awards are given annually to people who play a key role in making the Carolinas a player in the energy industry.

“Dr. Winsor has continued to demonstrate great leadership in creating educational programs that address cutting edge technologies and careers in the energy technology sectors,” the award nomination reads.

The nomination highlights Winsor’s role as the chairwoman of the regional Nuclear Workforce Initiative in collaboration with the Savannah River Site Community Reuse Organization and other area colleges, in addition to the creation of the college’s radiation protection technology program in 2008 and nuclear quality systems program in 2012.

It also recognizes Winsor’s commitment to the planned construction of a Center for Energy and Advanced Manufacturing on the Aiken Tech campus, which has gained extensive community support. The facility will be a centerpiece of the college’s efforts to develop a high-skill workforce for the region’s energy and manufacturing sectors.

“It is an honor to receive this recognition on behalf of Aiken Technical College and the Nuclear Workforce Initiative, and to be in the company of others who recognize the importance of the energy sector to the Carolinas,” Winsor said. “We are all aware of the great need for highly skilled workers in our region, and Aiken Technical College is committed to training local citizens to become part of this growing energy workforce.”
