New head of Augusta Prep Upper School named

Jan Hicks retiring

Augusta Preparatory Day School is getting a new leader.

Stephen Schools was recently named to succeed Head of Upper School Jan Hicks after her retirement at the end of the school year, according to a news release issued Wednesday.

Schools has more than 22 years experience in education and is currently the head of upper school at The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland in Baltimore.

“Mr. Schools is a consummate educational professional,” Head of School Becky Gilmore said in the release. “His independent school background, his varied experiences in excellent school programs, and his understanding of the importance of fostering 21st century skills while honoring our tradition of academic excellence will serve Augusta Prep’s forward-thinking strategic vision well.”

Hicks is retiring after eight years as the school’s head of upper school. She started at Augusta Prep in 2005 after stepping down as Fort Gordon’s commanding general.

“Jan leaves Augusta Prep’s Upper School in excellent shape for Mr. Schools,” Gilmore said in the release. “Her leadership has set the standard high and her commitment to a smooth transition has already been proven. Nevertheless, she will be missed by all of us.”
