Georgia Regents University adding funding for WACG-FM

A new voice is coming to local radio station WACG-FM (90.7), the Georgia Public Broadcasting station on the former Augusta State University campus.

Georgia Regents University is providing funding for a station manager, radio host and community liasion – someone who will provide hyperlocal content for the school and Augusta, university and GPB officials said. The open position is advertised but not yet filled.

Much of the station’s programming will remain the same including syndicated shows from GPB and National Public Radio.

“It’s reinvigorating WACG,” said David Brond, GRU’s senior vice president for communications and marketing.

The station manager and host will be hired by GRU but subject to editorial review by GPB, Brond said.

Improvements to technology at the station building will be co-funded by GRU and GPB.

The changes should be underway by March, Brond said.

Mandy Wilson, communications manager for GPB, said the position is similar to one in Macon, Ga., where GPB partners with Mercer University and the Center for Collaborative Journalism. There, students learn about the broadcasting industry and intern with the radio station.

A radio station was founded in 1973 at Augusta College, later renamed Augusta State University before its recent merger with Georgia Health Science University to form GRU. Since 1986, it has retained a partnership with GPB, Wilson said.

Student radio internships are a short-term goal for GRU, Brond said. Eventually, he would like to see students initiate a student-run radio station.

“This will bring additional resources that will assist students in a professional setting,” Brond said.

Wilson said there are no immediate plans to hire a GPB reporter in the Augusta area. A reporter was last at the station in 2010, and a part-time producer and announcer resigned in 2011, she said.

“We are just trying to build the station up and we thought it important to get a station manager, a host in,” Wilson said.
