State Superintendent John Barge selected two local high school students Friday to serve on his 2012-13 Student Advisory Council.
Abbey Padgett of Westside and Maggie Rollins of Greenbrier will join 48 other Georgia students in the group tasked with advising Barge on how state policies affect the everyday classroom.
“The Student Advisory Council allows me to hear directly from students in our schools and discuss major initiatives with them,” Barge said in a news release. “The Council also gives students the opportunity to share with me their ideas and concerns, which we can use to shape future state policies.”
More than 750 students applied for the positions. Students were selected based on the strength of their essay applications.
The Student Advisory Council will meet twice a year, with the first meeting scheduled for Nov. 28 at the Georgia Department of Education in Atlanta.
