Columbia County’s school board on Tuesday approved purchases of food for next year.
The board awarded bids of $2.24 million to U.S. Food Service for food, $12,764 to Leo’s Produce for fresh fruit and vegetables.
In addition, trustees awarded a bid of $344,225 to Southeastern Paper Group for paper products.
All of the bids are for the 2012-13 school year.
Superintendent Charles Nagle also provided an update on two major building projects: construction of a new Evans Elementary School and the new Columbia Middle School.
“We’re getting the steel (frame) up, and that’s a good sign,” Nagle said.
Both schools are scheduled to open at the start of the 2013-14 school year.
Board members also approved promoting special services facilitator Tiera Bowen to assistant principal at Evans Middle School, and named Grovetown Middle School counselor Missy Hughes as that school’s assistant principal.
