Augusta Tech might train Richmond County school bus drivers

A Richmond County Board of Education committee will consider allowing Augusta Technical College to train bus drivers before the school system hires them.

The trainees would enroll in a college course to receive training and certification, committee member Venus Cain said. The committee will meet today.

“They’ll train people, and when they come to us they’ll be certified and ready to go,” she said.

Cain did not know whether drivers would be required to enroll in the classes or whether they would still be able to receive free training through the school system.

The committee will also discuss the job description for assistant director of transportation.

At a school board retreat in March, board member Marion Barnes said it’s been unfair for Transportation Department Director Jimmie Wiley to run the department alone.

The meeting will be at 4 p.m. at the district office, 864 Broad St. Other items to be discussed today include a 15-day assessment update, Richmond County Technical Career Magnet School curriculum update, and College and Career Readiness Index information.
