Registration for Georgia’s pre-kindergarten program in Richmond County will be held March 28.
The program has 1,170 seats available, which are awarded by lottery the day of registration, according to Audrey Spry, the interim director of Title 1 and Georgia pre-K.
Parents can sign up at all elementary schools in the district except C.T. Walker Magnet School. Students must be Georgia residents and 4 years old on or before Sept. 1.
Gov. Nathan Deal implemented deep cuts to pre-K this year because of dwindling money in the lottery fund that supports it. The state cut 10 days out of the pre-K calendar year and increased class sizes by two students to 22.
The shorter year cut teacher salaries and benefits, which in May led 41 of Richmond County’s 47 pre-K teachers to request a transfer out of the program.
Spry said she did not know how many teachers would request out of the program for next year but encouraged all parents to apply.
