Exploration into privatizing the Richmond County school system’s transportation department is still in the beginning stages – three months after the school board directed staffers to begin the bidding process.
School board member Jack Padgett Jr. said the school system has not yet issued requests for proposals but is expected to start the bidding by early March.
He said the district should then be able to review the bids by early April, when the administration begins to discuss the system’s fiscal year 2012-13 budget.
Board members voted to look into the costs of privatization in October after the school year began with thousands of complaints about late buses and inefficient routes.
Padgett said he is interested to find out whether privatization would cost less than the $9.8 million the district spends annually.
