Richmond County school board District 1 candidate Christy Cunningham drops out

One of two candidates challenging Richmond County Board of Education District 1 incumbent Marion Barnes withdrew from the race Friday morning.

Augusta resident Christy R. Cunningham completed paperwork to take her name out of the race, Richmond County Board of Elections assistant director Travis Doss confirmed.

Cunningham’s withdrawal leaves one candidate, Augusta businessman Lucien Williams, facing Barnes, a 12-year incumbent.

The only other newcomer in the school board race is Robert Cheek, a Pq Corp. shipping manager, who will run against incumbent Jimmy Atkins for the District 8 seat.

Incumbents Barbara Pulliam in District 4, Patsy Scott in District 5 and Helen Minchew in District 10 are unopposed.
