Drugs, boats, cars and currency seized in Wadley raid

An eight-month investigation resulted in law enforcement seizing drugs, vehicles and currency Thursday in Wadley.

FBI agent James Harrison said the operation was conducted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Augusta-based FBI Safe Streets Task Force.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Gary Hutchins, warrants were served in Jefferson, Burke, Emanuel, Johnson and Washington counties in a coordinated raid at 6 a.m. Thursday.

“These were big boys in drug trafficking in our area,” Hutchins said. “We found marijuana, cocaine and a lot of money.”

Several hours after the initial raids, law enforcement agencies were camped out around a home on Poplar Street in Wadley. Investigators eventually seized at least three vehicles, an ATV, a bass boat, a Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle and a trailer full of other items from a building on the property.

“This is an on-going investigation so we can’t say much right now,” Harrison said. “I can tell you this involves a pretty complex illegal narcotics distribution operation that has had tentacles reaching out into several surrounding counties.”

Hutchins said he expects multiple arrests to follow as the investigation progresses.
