Elderly man sentenced to prison in child molestation case

An elderly man accused of child molestation was sentenced Tuesday to prison.

Herman Miskelly, 76, entered an Alford plea in Richmond County Superior Court to reduced charges of three counts of felony sexual battery.

An Alford plea isn’t an admission of guilt, but an acknowledgement of the sufficiency of evidence needed for a conviction.

Judge Daniel J. Craig accepted the plea and sentenced Miskelly to 10 years in prison, followed by five years on probation.

Assistant District Attorney John Markwalter said if the case had gone to trial, testimony would prove Miskelly sexually molested two victims, the first in 2007 when the child was about 9 years old, and the second in 2010 when the child was between 6 and 7 years old.

Miskelly had no previous criminal history.
