Hephzibah woman charged with child cruelty after 2-year-old son dies

Katherine Smith was booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on a charge of cruelty to children in the second degree, according to jail records. It wasn't immediately known whether her charges will be upgraded.

A 2-year-old boy whose mother was arrested on a child cruelty charge after he was hospitalized Friday has died, Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said.

Mason Smith, who was being treated for head injuries at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia, was pronounced dead at 5:55 p.m., Bowen said. An autopsy is scheduled for early this week at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta.

Deputies were called to the hospital early Friday and spoke with the child’s mother, Katherine Smith, who said she had sent him to the corner of his room to discipline him, then later heard a “thud” and returned to find him on the floor. She told police that he suffered from a syndrome that causes him to hold his breath until he loses consciousness.

She was booked into the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on a charge of cruelty to children in the second degree, according to jail records. It wasn’t immediately known whether her charges will be upgraded.
