Boy, 15, shoots uncle in father's defense, Columbia County police say

A 38-year-old man was hospitalized Saturday after being shot by his nephew for choking his father, deputies say.

Columbia County sheriff’s deputies, who were called around 2:30 a.m.. found Kenneth Wayne Newman Jr., 38, on the kitchen floor at a home in the 2500 block of Louisville Road, according to a police statement. He had a gunshot wound about 6 inches below his neck.

According to the release, Newman came to the home, threatened to kill Richard Green and began punching him. After Newman placed him in a chokehold, Green’s 15-year-old son got a .22-caliber rifle and threatened to shoot if he didn’t release the hold, the statement said.

When Newman didn’t let go, Green’s son fired once, striking Newman in the back, the statement said.

There were at least five other people in the home at the time, including Dusti Headley, 37, who was charged with making false statements and two counts of battery for fighting Green and his son, police said. She is being held in the Columbia County Detention Center on a $13,300 bond.

Newman was taken to Georgia Regents Medical Center and has charges pending against him. Green’s son will not face charges.
