Hephzibah woman, dog chase off burglar

An armed Hephzibah woman and her dog chased a burglar Tuesday evening after she discovered the man in her home.

The 24-year-old woman told police she returned to her Harrogate Drive home about 11 p.m. After letting her dog out of its cage, she discovered that the back glass door had been broken and was unlocked.

According to an incident report, she was going into the bedroom to get a rifle when a man ran from another bedroom in the home.

The woman, with the rifle in her hand, and her dog chased the burglar. She told police she intended to shoot him but was concerned she would hit her dog, which was jumping on the man’s back.

She fired a round into the ground before going back to her home to reload. When she returned, the man had disappeared.

Police said she and the dog then got in her vehicle and continued searching for the burglar while waiting for police to arrive.

The burglar, who was not captured, made off with electronics and four guns, the report said.
