Richmond County authorities looking for man in St. Mary on the Hill donation box theft

Police are searching for a man wanted for questioning in a theft from St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church.

In May, Richmond County sheriff’s deputies were called to the church, 1420 Monte Sano Ave., where they learned money had been removed from the donation boxes for the second time in less than two weeks.

A church employee, who is in charge of emptying the boxes daily, told police surveillance video captured a man kicking the boxes, mounted on brick columns in the lobby, to get the cash.

The boxes, which are labeled “Poor Box” and “Catholic Social Service,” allow members to donate money to the causes.

On Thursday, police released a photo of the man wanted for questioning in the theft. Anyone with information can contact the sheriff’s office at (706) 821-1020 or 821-1080.
