Aiken coroner confirms cause of death in police shooting

An autopsy revealed that an Aiken County woman shot by a deputy Monday died of blood loss.

Deborah McCollum, 52, of Andrews Circle, was fatally wounded after deputies arrived at her home about 10:20 a.m. to find her brandishing a weapon at the front door. Deputies had been called to the home after the woman threatened suicide.

Deputy Christopher Salley, who fired the shot, has been placed on administrative leave while the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigates the shooting.

Coroner Tim Carlton said he could not disclose the location of her wound because of the ongoing investigation. She was pronounced dead at her residence.
